Chroma keying has been element of the special effects of moviemaking arsenal for decades. In fact, you can trace the starting point of the plan right back to the early days of film. In the 1930s, used back projection to make actors emerge as if they were on location, when in fact they were still in a studios of Hollywood. The law is the similar today, but the technology used has considerably transformed. Currently, instead of projecting the preferred scene onto a monitor behind the actors, a single bright color in background is used instead. This can then be electronically subtracted, and lots of other background put in its place.
